The sibilant sounds are:

  • s /s/
  • z /z/
  • sh /ʃ/
  • ch /tʃ/
  • x (sounds like /ks/)
  • j or ge (soft g, like garage)

These sounds are like hissing or buzzing.

Voiced consonants

are consonant sounds that make your throat vibrate when you say them.

Put your hand on your throat and say these sounds:

b, d, g, v, z, m, n, l, r

You will feel a buzz or vibration.

These are voiced.

voiceless consonants

These sounds do NOT vibrate:

p, t, k, f, s

No vibration → voiceless consonants
